Water damage does not guarantee that mold will grow, but the response window matters. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends drying wet or damp materials within 24-48 hours when possible. The longer drywall, insulation, carpet padding, cabinets, or wood framing stay wet, the harder they can be to dry and the greater the chance of hidden damage.

If water is still entering the property, stop the source only when it is safe to do so. Avoid standing water near electrical equipment, document the damage, and begin water removal and structural drying as quickly as possible.

What to Do During the First 48 Hours

The 24-48 hour period is a drying guideline, not a countdown that makes every wet property moldy at the same moment. Temperature, material type, airflow, the amount of water, and how long moisture remains trapped all affect the outcome.

1. Make the Area Safe

Do not enter standing water when there may be electrical, structural, sewage, or chemical hazards. If floodwater or a sewage backup is involved, keep occupants away from the affected area and use professionals experienced with contaminated-water cleanup.

Fans are not appropriate in every situation. EPA flood-cleanup guidance cautions against using fans when mold is already visible or when the water may be contaminated because air movement can spread contaminants.

2. Document the Water Source and Damage

Before moving or discarding damaged property, take clear photographs and video when it is safe. Record:

  • When the water was first noticed.

  • Which rooms and materials were affected.
