What a dehumidifier can control, what it cannot fix, and the humidity range to aim for.
Yes, a dehumidifier can help prevent mold by reducing excess moisture in the air. It can also support a properly designed drying or moisture-control plan. But a dehumidifier does not remove existing mold, repair a leak, stop groundwater seepage, or guarantee that wet walls and floors are dry.

If RH drops but an odor, stain, or damp material remains, the dehumidifier may be controlling room air without resolving a hidden source.
It may reduce a general damp odor by lowering humidity, but it does not remove an active mold source. A persistent musty odor can indicate affected material behind drywall, under flooring, inside cabinets, or near HVAC components.
